This Newbery winner is excellent historical fiction. I'm probably biased, because my immigrant ancestors settled in small Kansas towns about the same time this story was set, so it felt familiar and true to me from the beginning, but Abilene Tucker is a great protagonist - tough and forlorn and determinedly independent - and the slow reveal of the town's history and secrets makes for a charming read.
